ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the relationship between carnal nature and Christian ethics. With influences as diverse as Billy Holiday, and Babbie Mason, new insights are crafted from both opaque and transparent dialogues. Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by the ephemeral nature of "the moment". What starts out as triumph soon becomes debased into a dialectic of temptation, leaving only a sense of what could have been and the dawn of a new order. As intermittent forms become transformed through emergent and personal practice, each viewer experiences a tribute to the possibilities of a new world.

BIOGRAPHY
With her unique blend of Jazz, Soul and Gospel, Petula Beckles is one of the most vibrant, and promising Gospel artists to date. Her golden array of smooth tones and melodious stories captivates her audience creating a warm effervescent atmosphere of praise. No shrinking flower when it comes to expressing her deep spirituality, she speaks life into the words of her songs and the truth of her conviction is clear to all who hear her.

Born in Tobago West Indies, Petula Beckles began her story as a child protégé performing her first song, “Turn your Life to Jesus” at the age of 5. Her natural talent and love for singing led her to become the Golden Star Karaoke Girl in Tobago at age 14. Although not formally trained, Ms. Beckles’ talent won her a full scholarship to sing with the Chamber Choir and Choral at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas.

While attending college, Petula toured with the ensemble as well as an African a cappella group called ‘The Zambian Vocal majority’ singing throughout Texas. She also received invitations to sing solo at various events and concerts. After moving to Florida in 2005 Petula decided to follow another passion of hers; children, she became a Baby Nurse. While using her voice to soothe babies, Ms. Beckles, never forgetting her first love, worked behind the scenes and released her first single “Today I Will Shout” in 2006, which charted at #21 on the Independent International top 30’s in 2010. Though she enjoyed working with children, Petula heeded the call from God and began her music ministry full time in December 2007.

From 2008 and beyond Petula Beckles took the Gospel world by storm releasing her solo debut album “My Song of Jesus” which aided in landing Petula a distribution contract with Tate Music Group. She has shared billing and stages with Gospel greats as Steve Green, Canton Jones, Lexi, DeWayne Woods, Lisa McClendon, Kim Burrell, just to name a few. She is currently a worship leader at Zoe Ministries under the direction of the multiple award winning Song-writer and Musician David Bratton, where Master Prophet Bishop E. Bernard Jordan presides.

Petula has toured a great deal gracing various stages as Gospel Uptown, The Knitting Factory, Broward College OMNI Auditorium, Village Underground, Nuyorican Poet’s Café, Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center, The C-Room Atlanta, York College Performing Arts Center, Arlene's Grocery, Ella Lounge and more. Petula’s stage has the quintessence Jazz house feel with a kiss of whimsy—she often performs sitting on a chair with her whimsical jade Guitar on her lap, an instrument she taught herself to play.  An upright bass, piano, percussions and bongos complete the Petula Beckles experience.

“If you fail to prepare, you’ve prepared to fail” is Petula’s motto. It is with this mind-set that the Gospel/ Jazz Sensation won herself the 2012 En Sound Music Award for “Best Jazz Performance”, and two 2016 Radio Alliance Awards for “Alternative CD of the Year” and “Gospel Jazz Song of the Year”.  Petula is using her God-given talents to reach out to the world and touch each soul with her lyrical testimonies; you can expect great and marvelous things from this blossoming flower.
